It is a path – still in full swing – along which the Anci has gradually earned the authority that today makes it the only counterpart of the Institutions on issues of interest to the Municipalities, and which ensures that Mayors, Assessors, Councilors and all the figures active in each municipality look at the Association as a network that unites thousands of realities, each with full citizenship rights, thanks to which they can express their voice with multiplied force.

Oltre 100 anni di attività raccontano una storia che affonda le sue radici in quella del Paese, e insieme a questa cresce.
Sono 7.134 i Comuni aderenti all’Associazione, dati aggiornati al 1 gennaio 2022, rappresentativi del 94,7% della popolazione, numeri che parlano con chiarezza di un radicamento assai saldo nel tessuto sociale, geografico e culturale italiano. In tutto questo tempo, e con questa straordinaria quantità di interlocutori, l’Anci ha lavorato con passione e continuità al servizio delle istituzioni e al fianco di chi giorno dopo giorno è impegnato a favorire sviluppo e competitività dei territori.
Lungo questo percorso l’Associazione ha saputo interpretare, e qualche volta ha anticipato, i mutamenti socio-economici, politici e culturali che hanno contribuito all’innovazione del mondo delle Autonomie locali, sempre accompagnata dalla consapevolezza che rappresentare i Comuni significa farsi carico di necessità e istanze dei cittadini stessi.
Si tratta di un cammino – tuttora in pieno svolgimento – lungo il quale l’Anci si è man mano guadagnata l’autorevolezza che ne fa oggi l’unica controparte delle Istituzioni sui temi di interesse dei Comuni, e che fa sì che Sindaci, Assessori, Consiglieri e tutte le figure attive in ogni municipalità guardino all’Associazione come a una rete che accomuna migliaia di realtà, ciascuna con pieno diritto di cittadinanza, grazie alla quale esprimere la propria voce con forza moltiplicata.
Un ruolo, e più ancora un modo di interpretarlo, che nel 2004 ha portato all’Anci la medaglia d’oro al merito civile da parte del Presidente della Repubblica, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. “Per lo spirito di dedizione ai valori del complesso dei Comuni italiani” si legge nella motivazione, ed è come leggere un grazie per aver custodito, valorizzato e promosso un patrimonio – le città – di tradizione e cultura, identità e capacità di innovare che rende vivo e vitale il Paese".
