L’Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer (IUEM) est un organisme pluridisciplinaire dans le domaine des sciences de la mer et du littoral dont les activités sont centrées autour de 3 missions : la recherche, la formation et l’observation.
L’IUEM regroupe sept laboratoires (Unités mixtes de recherche associant l’UBO, le CNRS, l’IRD, l’Ifremer et l’UBS) où travaillent près de 500 chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs, ingénieurs, techniciens et administratifs permanents et contractuels.
Ecole interne de l’Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), l’IUEM propose au sein du domaine de formation Sciences de la Mer et du Littoral (SML), huit cursus de master très étroitement associés à ses laboratoires et abrite également l’École Doctorale des Sciences de la Mer et du Littoral (EDSML), école pluridisciplinaire associant 25 laboratoires d’accueil, au sein et à l’extérieur de l’IUEM.
L’IUEM, en tant qu’Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers (OSU), contribue à une mission nationale d’observation portée par une unité de service dédiée. L’océan y est observé depuis le littoral jusqu’au domaine hauturier, de la surface aux grands fonds et dans tous ses aspects : océan vivant et physique, interfaces côtes et fond, utilisation et gestion par les Hommes.
