The French Institute of Bioinformatics (IFB) is a national infrastructure of bioinformatics service resulting from a call for proposals "Infrastructure in Biology and Health" of the National "Investments for the Future" program.
This project brings together bioinformatics platforms dependent on the five main public research organizations, CNRS, INRAE, INRIA, CEA and INSERM, universities, CIRAD, and Pasteur and Curie institutes, or thirty platforms grouped into six regional poles covering the national territory.
IFB aims to promote the coordination of platform activity and optimize their scientific impact. To do this, it is necessary to pool skills and resources in different fields such as the deployment of IT infrastructure, the implementation of technological projects to develop new services, user training.
IFB provides support for various actions carried out in collaboration between several PFs and aimed at:
- Deploy an academic cloud dedicated to the management and analysis of the data produced by the living sciences based on national and regional IT infrastructures.
- Propose technological projects aimed at improving or developing new tools and services.
- Improve interoperability and deployment of existing tools.
- Pool training programs and develop a national program based on e-learning technologies.
- Set up networks, workshops, schools to promote scientific and technological animation, and the dissemination of skills. Support the Organization of Scientific Conferences (Jobim), Galaxy
- Respond in a coordinated manner to European structuring initiatives in bioinformatics (Elixir).

Infrastructure nationale de bioinformatique pour les communautés des sciences de la vie et le nœud français d'ELIXIR
L'Institut Français de Bioinformatique (IFB) est une infrastructure nationale de service en bioinformatique issue d'un appel à propositions « Infrastructures en Biologie et Santé » du programme national des «Investissements d'Avenir».
Ce projet rassemble des plateformes de bioinformatique dépendant des cinq principaux organismes publics de recherche, CNRS, INRAe, INRIA, CEA et INSERM, des universités, du CIRAD, et des Instituts Pasteur et Curie, soit une trentaine de plateformes regroupées en six pôles régionaux couvrant le territoire national.
L’IFB a pour objectif de favoriser la coordination de l’activité des Plateformes et d’optimiser leur impact scientifique. Pour ce faire, il est nécessaire de mutualiser les compétences et les ressources dans différents domaines comme le déploiement d’une infrastructure informatique, la mise en œuvre de projets technologiques pour développer de nouveaux services, la formation des utilisateurs.
L’IFB apporte son soutien à différentes actions réalisées en collaboration entre plusieurs PF et visant à :
- Déployer un Cloud académique dédié à la gestion et l’analyse des données produites par les sciences du vivant s’appuyant sur les infrastructures informatiques nationale et régionales.
- Proposer des projets technologiques ayant pour objet l’amélioration ou le développement de nouveaux outils et services.
- Améliorer l’interopérabilité et le déploiement des outils existants.
- Mutualiser les programmes de formation et développer un programme national basé sur les technologies de E-learning.
- Mettre en place des réseaux, ateliers, écoles pour favoriser l’animation scientifique et technologique, et la diffusion des compétences. Soutenir l’organisation de conférences scientifiques (JOBIM), Galaxy
- Répondre de façon coordonnée aux initiatives de structuration européenne en bioinformatique (ELIXIR).
