Read our council member, Mehrunisha Suleman’s latest piece in the Health Service Journal. In it, she takes our recent survey data, which suggests 26% of Muslims, 40% of Black, and 49% of Asian individuals living in England support assisted dying, compared to 74% of White people, and explores what this could mean for the NHS workforce if assisted death was to be legalised.

“The NHS mirrors the country’s growing diversity with nearly half of hospital and community health doctors being from minoritised backgrounds. We must, therefore, acknowledge that many practitioners - whether defined by their ethnic, religious, or cultural identities - may find themselves torn between their deeply held beliefs and the law...

Policymakers must be acutely attuned to this dynamic when crafting legislation. Ignoring the ethical dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals risks amplifying attrition rates, fragmenting the workforce, and deepening divisions between those with differing views.”
