Les MFR proposent chaque année dans leur catalogue une offre de formation composée de plus de 350 qualifications dans 18 secteurs professionnels différents, sans oublier les classes d'orientation (4e-3e d'orientation, Seconde Générale et Technologique).
Les MFR proposent des formations par alternance par voie scolaire (sous contrat avec le ministère de l'Agriculture) ou par apprentissage qui ont toutes la même caractéristique : une partie de la formation se déroule en entreprise (au sens large), une autre partie à la MFR. Le maître de stage ou d'apprentissage a un rôle de formateur à part entière.
Pour accompagner le projet d’un apprenant, dans le cadre d’une formation par alternance, il est important, aux yeux des Maisons familiales rurales, d’assurer une relation étroite entre les différents partenaires qui interviennent dans l’éducation.

Le mouvement des MFR, né en 1937 en France, a su se développer avec succès dans de nombreux pays à travers le monde, en Afrique, en Asie et en Amérique latine. Les Fédérations départementales et régionales de MFR françaises développent aujourd’hui des actions de solidarité internationale avec leurs Unions nationales partenaires.
