Trait d’union de quelque 40 000 chirurgiens-dentistes via ses associations adhérentes, l’ADF constitue une force de représentation de tout premier plan, qui noue un dialogue permanent avec les principaux partenaires de la profession dentaire : pouvoirs publics, Conseil national de l’ordre des chirurgiens-dentistes, responsables hospitaliers et universitaires, industriels, fabricants de matériels, médecins, pharmaciens...
Lieu privilégié d’échange et de concertation, l'ADF constitue aussi un laboratoire d’idées, une force de proposition dans les domaines du progrès scientifique, de la qualité des produits et des équipements, du service et de la relation avec les patients, de la prévention et de la formation continue.
Au niveau national, l’ADF est membre à part entière du Groupe de travail de la Haute autorité de santé sur le DPC (Développement professionnel continu). L’ADF a permis la création de L'Institut français pour la recherche odontologique (IFRO) en 2000, structure à laquelle elle apporte son soutien dans le but de promouvoir la recherche odontologique effectuée en France.
Enfin, l’ADF a une dimension internationale puisqu’elle représente la France au sein de la Fédération dentaire internationale (FDI) et son Organisation régionale européenne (ORE). L’ADF apporte aussi son soutien financier au Groupement des associations dentaires francophones (GADEF). Elle est également porte-parole de la France sur les questions de normalisation à travers son partenariat avec l’AFNOR.
L’ADF organise chaque année un Congrès de formation qui est devenu l‘une des plus importantes manifestations mondiales, associant, dans le même temps et sur un même lieu - au Palais des Congrès, place de la Porte-Maillot à Paris - un programme scientifique et une exposition d’envergure internationale.
