El Ateneo Mercantil de Valencia nace el 23 de Octubre de 1879 para “atender las necesidades culturales y de formación, en su profesión, de los empleados del comercio”· Sus estatutos se formalizan en 1879. Citando al II Marqués del Turia, que fue Presidente de la entidad: “En el Ateneo se ha impulsado todo, desde las Escuelas de Comercio hasta el Bolsín de Corredores, desde la Cámara de Comercio al progreso universitario, de las Escuelas de Idiomas a las Ferias de Muestras, del trasvase de aguas hasta la conservación de la monumentalidad, de la Solución Sur para la defensa de la ciudad a la obra del Puerto”. Asimismo, el Ateneo hizo nacer obras tan dispares como la Sociedad Valenciana de Tranvías, la primera emisora de radio de la ciudad, la conexión ferroviaria Madrid-Cuenca, el traslado de la Iglesia de Sta. Catalina de Siena o la Asociación Valenciana de la Caridad.
De sobra conocida es también la gran empresa que el Ateneo llevó a cabo con la organización de la Exposición Regional de 1909, motor de la industria y el comercio valenciano de nuestro siglo y de la que quedan huellas tan significativas como el Himno de la Exposición, encargado por el Ateneo para la ocasión y hoy Himno Oficial de la Comunidad.
En 1960 el Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Valencia concedió al Ateneo la Medalla de Oro de la ciudad.
En 1970 el Consejo de Ministros lo declaraba, Entidad de Utilidad Pública.
El Ateneo Mercantil de Valencia continúa conservando su domicilio social en la Plaza del Ayuntamiento número 18, de Valencia y cuenta con alrededor de 4000 socios, y Carmen de Rosa Torner es la actual Presidenta de la institución.
