Ce territoire rural fragile est reconnu pour la qualité de vie qu’on y trouve, ses milieux naturels d’une richesse et d’une diversité exceptionnelles, la diversité de ses paysages et son patrimoine architectural remarquable.
Créé en 1977, le Parc naturel régional du Luberon est géré par un syndicat mixte auquel adhèrent 78 communes, le Conseil régional, les Départements de Vaucluse et des Alpes de Haute-Provence et 5 intercommunalités.
Il met en œuvre une stratégie de développement et d’aménagement durables du territoire, de préservation des ressources et de valorisation des patrimoines ; ses missions sont définies par le code de l’environnement.
Grâce à leurs actions, le Parc du Luberon et ses partenaires jouent un rôle essentiel dans la reconnaissance du Luberon au plan international. Le territoire du Parc du Luberon est ainsi doublement reconnu par l’Unesco : Réserve de biosphère Luberon-Lure et Géoparc mondial Unesco.
