La première édition de NJP a vu le jour en 1973. Ambitieux défi lancé par une poignée de jeunes Nancéiens désireux de structurer un événement jazzistique d’envergure en Lorraine, Nancy Jazz Pulsations s’est aujourd’hui imposé comme le rendez-vous automnal du Grand Est.
Ses audaces avant-gardistes en matière de jazz l’élevant rapidement en figure de pionnier, le festival acquit ses lettres de noblesse par l’éclectisme de sa programmation. Une durée exceptionnelle pour un simple festival, le souci d’étendre les concerts à toute la région et le maintien de tarifs accessibles lui permirent de bénéficier rapidement du statut de manifestation populaire et de se voir honorer de la venue, chaque automne, de quelques 100 000 festivaliers.
