Su consideración como primera institución bibliotecaria española la convierte por sí misma en centro de referencia y asesoramiento para el desarrollo de políticas bibliotecarias encaminadas a generar proyectos de mejora en el ámbito español.
Participa en numerosos proyectos europeos e iberoamericanos y desarrolla una interesante y nutrida programación cultural dirigida a distintos públicos, que redunda en una mayor formación y un mejor acceso a la cultura.
