IDM a été créée à Annecy (France) en mai 1993 pour proposer aux stations de ski françaises des solutions alternatives en matière de pièces détachées pour les remontées mécaniques et les dameuses. Dès les premières années, les stations de ski reconnaissent le savoir-faire et la réactivité de la jeune entreprise.
L'expérience étant concluante, IDM s'installe à Montmélian (France) en 1996 pour se rapprocher du cœur des Alpes. Elle est parmi les premières entreprises à s'installer dans le parc d'activités de la Grande Île qui sera plus tard connu sous le nom d'Alpespace. Cette zone est devenue l'un des principaux centres de décision concernant le développement des stations de ski françaises et européennes.
IDM devient rapidement un acteur majeur dans la fourniture de pièces détachées pour les stations de ski et l'entreprise choisit de diversifier sa gamme de produits pour accélérer son développement. Elle étend son activité à la vente de tapis roulants neufs, de galeries et de téléskis à enrouleur.
Initialement fournisseur de câbles pour les stations de ski, IDM ajoute à son offre les services et le câblage grâce à un partenariat avec la société Câbles et Montage.
IDM regarde également au-delà des frontières avec une offre très compétitive en Suisse, Andorre, Italie et Espagne.
En 2022, Damien Laymond et Julien Guilloteau reprennent l'entreprise avec une équipe renforcée. La stratégie future de l'entreprise savoyarde repose sur trois objectifs principaux :

Développer et accroître la visibilité des produits IDM vers les marchés européens et internationaux grâce à un réseau de partenaires efficaces et réactifs.
Dévier sa gamme de produits avec des solutions innovantes et écologiques pour les stations de ski mais aussi pour toutes les remontées mécaniques (installations pour le transport touristique et urbain).
